I have to confess I am a movie buff! I love movies. Do you? One of the great movies is "Grapes of Wrath" starring Henry Fonda, released in 1940. Perhaps you have read the book, written by John Steinbeck. The book was written on the heels of the great depression. I remember the scenes in the movie of the dry and barren fields. This is the image that comes to my mind when I read in the book of Joel about the devastation to the entire land of Judah by locusts. There were four waves of these destructive insects that overtook and destroyed all the crops.
The people were in great despair and could see no way out. All hope was lost. This is when Joel called them to prayer. Prayer was their last hope. He led them into fasting and prayer. He taught them to repent during prayer.
Something to think about:
Why do we pray after we have tried everything else?
