A couple of months ago I was in a store and I noticed a elderly woman carrying shopping bags. The woman was bent over with her burden and kept shifting her weight from one foot to the other as if to relieve pain in her feet. She would find a place to sit and stay there for a short time and then journey on through the store. Twice I saw her put down her bags and dig through her purse as if she had lost something important. I might add that her purse was bulging and she had to remove items from it to look though it. I must admit that I tried to imagine all that she had in her purse. With several bags plus her purse she couldn’t stand up straight and could hardly walk. Considering all that I observed I had to give her credit for continuing on. She was persistent, I must say! She pushed on even in pain.

I began to consider the things that I saw. This woman seemed to be burdened down with new things and things that she didn’t need. She seemed to put more burdens on herself when she already had more than she could carry. She didn’t have anyone to help her.
She is not unlike many of us. We carry burdens we don’t have the strength for even though it might bring us pain. We persevere and just keep going as if we don’t have a choice. The burdens I am thinking of now are spiritual and emotional burdens.
It is the truth though. We keep carrying things that we can leave behind us. We do have someone to carry our burdens for us, Jesus Christ.
When was the last time you asked Jesus to carry your burdens for you? Next time
you are feeling tired and burdened ask Jesus to take the weight from you. Name your cares and concerns as you hand them to Him. Let Him take them from you and don’t take them back. Now, notice how much better you feel!
