“Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me.” My Mother taught me that little verse to help me survive life on the school playground. I would bet that you have used it in your life also. For years I thought that it was true but as an adult I learned that words do hurt and they can cause great damage. Everyone of us has felt emotional heart pain, to one extent or another.
In my twenty plus years of doing prayer ministry I have seen many lives negatively influenced because of harsh words, or the careless use of words, that were spoken to someone. The good news here is that God cares about the condition of our hearts for He sent His only son, Jesus, to us not only for our salvation from sin, but also to heal our damaged hearts.
Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and
walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself
up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
God commands us to love one another. One of the ways we can do this is to speak with love to others. God will work through that love to restore wounded hearts that harmful words--sticks and stones--of the past have created.
2 Corinthians 13:11 (NIV)
Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration,
encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.
And the God of love and peace will be with you.
